Religious Education
Mission Statement:
The purpose of the Religious Education Program is to uphold the
principles of the church. We strive to be a church where people of
diverse beliefs can worship in a spirit of reason, tolerance, freedom,
loving fellowship, and a commitment to social justice. |
Purpose and Goals
As the Unitarian Universalist Association
says, “the search for truth and meaning is a lifelong search. We are never too
young or too old to be learning.” The Religious Education (RE) Program of the
Universalist Unitarian Church of East Liberty promotes the spiritual growth of
children, youth and adults, and nurtures the religious life of church members,
their families, and the community. Religious education for the heart and the
mind is part of all we do at this church.
Responsibility for development of the church
Religious Education program is shared with the RE Committee of volunteers, the
RE Coordinator, and the minister. Religious Education curricula are selected
each year from the four “pillars” of RE: world religions, our Judeo-Christian
heritage, Unitarian Universalism, and Social Justice. Kids learn valuable
“moral lessons” that can help them navigate their complex lives while growing in
a caring, nurturing environment. Volunteers teach “Sunday School” classes on a
rotating basis; the RE Coordinator recruits and monitors volunteers, purchases
supplies, and provides administrative support; and the minister traditionally
has led adult education classes and advised the RE Committee on curriculum and
special events.
